Hasui 巴水: Karikachi Mountain Pass 狩勝 (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水
Title: Karikachi Mountain Pass 狩勝峠
Date: undated, ca. 1927
A full moon rises at dusk over Karikachi Pass in the Hidaka Mountains of Hokkaido, where patches of snow still remain at altitude from fall through spring. Although this is not the very earliest edition as it lacks the Rumi seal of the publisher, it is still a prewar edition. Note that this is the same edition of the example in the collection of the MFA Boston, whose example also lacks the “Rumi” seal. (Their work was acquired by the museum in 1952, so it was definitely printed during Hasui’s lifetime.) This work has the “Made in Japan” seal verso, which is most often seen on prints intended for US export in the late 1920s and 1930s. This dealer has never seen a “Made in Japan” seal on a postwar edition of a work; it was apparently required between 1921 and 1941, but the Japanese did not really export prints between about 1939 and the end of the war.
