Artist: Kawase Hasui 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: An Avenue of Cryptomerias, Nikkô (Nikkô suginamiki) 日光杉並木
Date: 1930
Peaceful evening scene of a man leading his firewood-laden horse beneath an avenue lined with majestic cryptomeria trees. It is perhaps early evening, the dappled shadows cast by an unseen moon that shines light from the right. A single star and a single yellow window-light make the scene feel less lonely. There are three cedar-lined roads in Nikko which form a monumental approach to the shrines and temples of the ancient city of Nikko. There are still 13,000 cryptomeria trees lining 22 miles of these roads, which were first planted by Matsudaira Masatsuna beginning in 1625. Rather sadly, this peaceful scene of a footpath is now a highway plied with motorcars. Provenance: From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu. A design that is rather seldom seen.
