Hasui 巴水 : Tsuruoka Hachiman Shrine Oversized Print 鶴岡八幡宮 (Sold)

A large ginko tree shows its fall colors at the entrance to the Hachiman Shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture. The details of the dappled shade on the stone steps and the pigeons on the ground at he base are lovely details that Hasui did not miss. Narazaki wrote “This piece is a toku-oban (oversized oban format). The composition is extremely detailed, showing the Tsuroka hachiman Shrine from the base of the stone steps and continuing towards the background mountain. The intricacy of the large ginko tree with its autumnal foliage and the position of the multi-storied entrance would have been a challenge for the block-cutter.” The contributions of the carver and printer cannot be underestimated, especially in such a relatively large work. The shrine was built more than 1000 years ago, dedicated to the deified Emperor Ojin, and was moved to its present location in Kamakura in 1191. There is a fine layer of mica applied to the entire print. Scarce design.
