Visitors enjoy blooming irises in “Sobû Garden, Meiji Shrine”. Hasui rarely lets on that a war has ravaged his country in these post-war views. He prefers to focus on the pristine, unchanged and peaceful aspects of Japan. Meiji Shrine itself was destroyed in the war and not rebuilt until 1958. With the round Watanabe seal lower left, indicating a 1st edition. Provenance: From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu. This exact print is shown full-page in the exhibition catalog “The Art of Kawase Hasui”, published in Japan by Tokyo Bijutsu in 2013, page 182. This exact print was also given a full page illustration in the 2013 Ota City Folk Museum catalog “Special exhibition of Hasui Kawase--In Commemoration of His 130 Anniversary”, page 272.
