Title:  Sobu Iris Garden, Meiji Shrine 明治神宮菖蒲田
Date: 1951

Visitors enjoy blooming irises in “Sobû Garden, Meiji Shrine”. Hasui rarely lets on that a war has ravaged his country in these post-war views. He prefers to focus on the pristine, unchanged and peaceful aspects of Japan. Meiji Shrine itself was destroyed in the war and not rebuilt until 1958. With the round Watanabe seal lower left, indicating a 1st edition. Provenance: From the personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu.
