Hasui 巴水: Snowy Valley of Mount Shirouma 白馬山 (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: Snowy Valley of Mount Shirouma 白馬山
Date: 1932

Mountain climbers ascend the Daisekkei (“Big Snowy Valley”) towards the pink-tinged horizon on Mount Shirouma. This work is unusual, if not unique, in showing mountain climbers hiking in a fairly inaccessible location, a far cry from his more familiar scenes of kimono-clad visitors enjoying ancient temples and parks. Mount Shirouma stands at almost 3000 meters in the Northern Alps and is one of the few peaks in Japan that features year-round snow fields. Hasui also created a design in 1924 that features a view from the peak of Mount Shirouma, so he must have made this popular hike himself to the summit. With the earliest seal for this design. Scarce design.
