Yui Town, Suruga. Mount Fuji’s snow-covered peak rises above an orange horizon into a gentle mist, the famous contours of its cone softly visible. It seems to be sunset, the landscape in autumn-like colors, but as the treetop at left is bare it is perhaps winter, as the work is dated the second month. A woman descends the path towards a small cluster of villagers; our vantage is from a rather steep decline, the buildings are set in a terraced fashion. We might be on the Tokaido Road itself, perhaps descending towards the foot of Satta Pass. Yui-cho was a town in Ihara District; in 2008 it was merged into Shimizu-ku into the the city of Shizuoka and the Ihara District was dissolved. Yui is still a post town on the Tokaido Road, and this station was most famously depicted by Hiroshige in his Hoeido Tokaido series. 

With the prewar Watanabe “D” seal, right margin,  that was in use between 1932 and 1941.
