Artist: Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) 川瀬巴水
Title: Hikawa Park in Omiya 大宮氷川公園
Date: 1930

Hikawa Park in Omiya. It is the special moment at sunset when the light from the setting sun settles just beneath the horizon,  casting its light only on the higher portion of a landscape. Here the green pine trees are glowing orange in their upper boughs for just a few moments before dusk descends. It is very doubtful that the park looks very much like this today, as in 1945, much of the wetlands of Hikawa Park in Omiya were drained and filled in, and a baseball stadium and boat pond were installed. Babe Ruth actually played an all-star game there in 1934. Hasui’s greatest strengths are in evidence here, as he has captured a very exact time and place. With a very early Watanabe seal, which was in use only between 1928 and 1932.

Condition: Very good impression, color and condition. With the “Made in Japan” stamp lower verso, which was only in use in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
