Title: Clearing After a Snowfall, Yoshida 吉田の雪晴
Date: 1944
Yoshida no yukibare. The rooflines of the snow-covered dwellings echo the shape of majestic Fuji-san, which seems very close due to the clearness of the winter air. One can’t help wonder if this oversized view of a pristine Mount Fuji was a way to comfort the Japanese during the war, and to encourage them to endure the hardships. This round Watanabe seal was used generally in the late 1940s; the example of 471a in Brown/Hotei also has this seal. Provenance: The personal collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu. This exact print is illustrated on page 214, number 357 of the 2013 Ota City Folk Museum catalog “Special exhibition of Hasui Kawase--In Commemoration of His 130 Anniversary”. A version of this design recently sold at Sothebys for more than $8000.
