Hasui: Chuo Ichiba, Central Market (築地市場 Tsukiji Fish Market) (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Chuo Ichiba, Central Market (Tsukiji Fish Market)
Series: One Hundred Views of New Tokyo
Date: 1936
An early morning peek at the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market, circa 1936. We see fishmongers pulling carts, and one holding a large fish by the tail. We see a man with a large shopping basket over his shoulder, perhaps buying for a restaurant. There is a single woman shown in the middle of the scene. Almost all the men wear western-style fedora hats. The corner of a cart is shown in the lower right hand corner, charmingly reminiscent of Hiroshige. The darkness despite a mostly clear sky indicates that Hasui is showing the market in the hour just as the sun is rising. Scarce design. The Tsukiji market was moved by the Japanese authorities from its longtime home of 80 years in October of 2018.
