Hasui himself wrote: “There is a pleasure district in the Kasuhe district of Kanazawa called Nagare by the locals because it faces the Asano River. Somehow the gurgling of the water and the sensuous sounds of the shamisen are full of sorrow. The low-hanging crescent moon and the shadows of the pine are indicative of a misty evening in autumn.” The printing is exquisitely subtle and creates an atmosphere very evocative of the time and place. Important design from Hasui’s best, pre-earthquake period.
