Hasui: Watercolor Painting of Kannon Temple (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Watercolor Painting of Kannon Temple
Date: Undated

Large watercolor painting on paper of a cliffside temple during a snowstorm. Matches the design for the print “Kannon Temple, Abumi” from 1922 (Hotei number 84), are rare snowscen. Dated on the back as Showa 19 (1944), probably by Hasui himself. Mr. Shimizu noted that this was the time that Hasui was living in Shiobara, a place he knew from childhood, to escape the wartime danger of Tokyo. TItled on right margin. The curator of the Ota City Folk Museum believes that there are three types of watercolors done by Hasui; an original for print design; ones intended for exhibition (signed with “hanga-do”); and by request for collectors who liked his prints, perhaps for a design close to their area of residence.
