A test printing of a snowscape by the publisher. We can see that this test print lacks the name and date of the design in the margin, yet it bears the publisher’s mark of Watanabe. This is a version with higher contrast than was eventually printed, with the sky darker and the rooftops lighter. Also included is a “keyblock” with the “Mihon” or “Sample” written in large Japanese script. One can see the astonishing level of craftsmanship necessary to create such a woodblock.
