Proof print from the studio of the publisher, Watanabe, this lacks the publisher’s seal and series title, but does contain the title, date and artist’s seal. This version is done with much lighter greys overall; it lacks most of the punchy contrast of the final version. It looks more like what the scene would actually look like in person, with the darks more muted. Watanabe probably ordered the printer to create more strong contrast, as he knew what appealed to the wider public. It is possible this bears a fold mark from being surreptitiously smuggled out of the shop.
