Title: Morning at Dôtonbori in Osaka  大阪道頓堀の朝
Dated: 1933

A boatman leans into the pole as he hand-powers his boat along the tranquil canal along the rows of prewar waterfront buildings. The unseen sun rises pink in the sky, and the composition lightens beautifully to the left, indicating the brightness of the early morning sun, a testament to the skill of the prewar printers. This pink-sky version is unpublished in Hotei; normally the sky is orange or yellow. With the Watanabe seal used in the early 1940s. Provenance: From the personal collection of René Balcer.
