Fuji-san

Mount Fuji is considered a mountain of peerless beauty and has come to symbolize all of Japan. It is by far the highest mountain in Japan. It rises over a surrounding plain with breathtaking symmetry. Worship of Fuji-san was common in the Edo period, both within Shinto and Buddhist and Taoist contexts. Hiroshige and Hokusai were the greatest artists to create series of views of Mt. Fuji. Thirty-six (36) and One Hundred (100) were common numbers of collected views.
