Tokushi Katsuhira 勝平得之: Akita Scenery; Evening at Hodono Bridge (Sold)
Artist: Tokushi Katsuhira 勝平得之 (1904-1971)
Title: Akita Landscape: Evening at Hodono Bridge 秋田風景 保戸野橋の夕Date: ca. 1930s
It is evening, and a fire tower rises behind the pink-hued Hodono Bridge, the sun glimpsed sinking in the far horizon. Along the road to the right we see a telephone line and several village homes next to the final rays of the sun that spill onto the road. Flying in the pink/purple sky are what seem to be seagulls. Even the title has been printed in pink, left margin. Tokushi Katsuhira was a self-taught artist who came from a family of farmers and papermakers; he was a carver of dolls before taking a course in woodcarving in 1928. He exhibited with Nihon Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai in 1928 and 1929. Most of his later works show local people engaged in the traditions and customs of his native Akita, so these purely landscape works are quite different from his later work.
