Okada Koichi: Mount Fuji from the Coast of Hagoromo (First Edition) (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Koichi Okada (1907-?)
Title: Mount Fuji from the Coast of Hagoromo Series: Twelve Views of Japan  Date: ca. 1950s

Mount Fuji rises above the coast at Hagoromo, the unseen sunrise reflecting pink onto the eastern side of its snow-covered cone. The terrific panoply of textures on the beach, waves and trees seem to be unique to this artist. The pink sunlight reflecting on the waves reaching the shore is an extra, subtle touch. Koichi Okada was a western-style painter who graduated from Bunka Gakuin and studied under Ishii Hakutei. This is from the first edition, with this specific Unsodo seal and the Shinmi printer’s seal and Okura carver’s seal, as well as the Gei watermark in left margin. Although works from later editions, including even Reiwa period, are common to the market, works from this first edition are rarely seen. There are stark differences in the printing quality, with this edition being much superior in terms of depth, finesse and visual interest.
