Kasamatsu Shiro: Inokashira at Dusk (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kasamatsu Shiro (1898-1991)
Title: Inokashira  Date: 1968

Sunset view of the scenic pond at Inokashira Park. Known for its profusion of cherry trees, the artist has instead focused on three towering conifers and their reflection in the evening light. Two ducks swim across the surface of Inokashira lake.  Located in Kichijoji, this park also is today home to a zoo, an aquarium and the Studio Ghibli museum. Between 1955 and 1965 Kasamatsu produced about 80 self-carved and self-printed designs, as here. This followed a collaboration with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo between 1919 and the late 1940s. At bottom reads: 1968 Anniversary (kinen 記念)Out of 60 (rokujû mai no uchi 60枚の内). This is a rarely seen design, so it is unknown if a full edition of 60 prints was created. The 1968 Anniversary notation may refer to his own milestone birthday, as the artist was born in 1898, 70 years prior. If this is the case, it is a lovely tribute to living fully in one's "sunset" years.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. The ink smudges on the margins are from the time of printing, and are therefore not considered to be flaws.  Dimensions: 41 x 28 cm Publisher: Self-printed
