Kasamatsu Shiro: Snow Country 雪国 (Sold)

Orange light spills out from a single doorway, its reflection glancing off of the dusky snow filling in the foreground. Outside the door a pair straw snow boots have been placed, and we see a traditional collecting basket hanging beneath the eaves. The snow has been rendered in sinuous heaps that convey its weight, both on the rooftops as well as piled on the ground.  Between 1955 and 1965 Kasamatsu produced about 80 self-carved and self-printed designs, as here. This followed a collaboration with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo between 1919 and the late 1940s. Titled in ink in kanji at bottom, and numbered bottom right “B 6/30”.
