Ishiwata Koitsu: Kannon Gate at Tsurumi 鶴見の観音 (Sold)
Artist: Ishiwata Kōitsu (1897-1987)
Title: Kannon Gate at Tsurumi 鶴見の観音 Date: 1931
A woman and her daughter pass beneath the Kannon Temple Gate, trees framing the entrance path. A large tree that has been marked as sacred dominates the left side of the design, and we can glimpse the guardian statue flanking the right side of the gate. The overall feeling of the work is very much Hasui-like, but it has its own unique style.
This scarce work is one of few published by Watanabe, here with the first edition seal at right that was in use 1928-32. Ishiwata Koitsu is no relation to the older Tsuchiya Koitsu, who also worked at about the same time. Ishiwata was a student of Kawase Hasui, whose influence is plainly evident; he only worked with Watanabe until 1935.
