Artist: Kawase Hasui  川瀬 巴水 (1883-1957)
Title: View of Azalea Garden and Mount Fuji
Series: Collection of Views of the Moto-Hakone Minami Mountain Villa
Date: 1935

A field of colorful clusters of azalea bushes brightens the foreground of this design. The textured clusters of clouds surrounding Mount Fuji echo the fluffy shapes of the blooms, while crisp Fuji against a clear blue sky offers something of a visual palate cleanser.  This series was commissioned by the Iwasaki family, the original founders of Mitsubishi. The prints in this series were later sold to foreign visitors when the villa was converted into a hotel, The Hotel de Yama, a resort in Hakone that is still in business on Lake Ashi. This is from the first (and only) edition, with the round Watanabe seal, lower left corner and an embossed title at bottom. In general, works from this series that were never framed often have toning from contact with their original presentation folders.

Condition: Excellent impression and color; very good condition. Never framed. Some light toning. Dimensions: ôban (40 x 27 cm)
