Artist: Chizuko Yoshida (1924-2017) and Hodaka Yoshida (1926-1995)
Title: Tenryuji Garden and Ryuanji Garden Date: 1953
These two works were created individually by each artist during their honeymoon trip in 1953. We are offering them as a pair as we feel that they should be kept together.
1) Chizuko Yoshida: Tenryuji Garden
This work is one of Chizuko’s earliest prints, made around the time when she and Hodaka were married. During their honeymoon in Nara and Kyoto, they both sketched the gardens there. This is from the famous Zen temple of Tenryuji in Kyoto. We can see here a move away from naturalism to abstraction. Self-carved and self-printed by the artist. With the title in Japanese Tenryuji Teien lower left. Chizuko was a renowned artist in her own right, and she married Hodaka Yoshida, the second son of Hiroshi Yoshida. There is currently a retrospective on Chizuko's work at the Portland Art Museum. Continuing the family’s artistic legacy, their daughter is the contemporary artist Ayomi Yoshida.
Signed: Pencil signature of Chizuko Yoshida, lower left, with date and title.
This work was made during Hodaka’s honeymoon trip to Nara and Kyoto with his wife Chizuko. In what seems very romantic now, they both sketched the gardens and created prints in similar sizes and styles. This is from the famous Zen rock garden of Ryoanji Temple, perhaps the most famous rock garden in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Self carved and self-printed by the artist. Hodaka Yoshida is the second son of Hiroshi Yoshida.
Signed: Signed in pencil Hodaka Yoshida, with Japanese title and date of 1953
Condition: Excellent impression and color; very good condition. Two tape remnants, verso. Dimensions: 28.1 x 20.2 cm
Please note that the price is for both works.
