Kunisada: Jiraiya in the Forest Triptych
Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Jiraiya in the Forest at Night
Date: 1852
On the right sheet Igarashi Norizen (or Noriyoshi) standing by a kago carriage: judging from his costume with stylized ebi lobster and mimasu three squares crests he must be Ichikawa Ebizó. On the left sheet is Jiraiya, disguised as a monk. Jiraiya is known as the master of frog magic, but we see no sign of it here. On the center sheet Hamaogi Rokusaburó and Hamaogi Naminoshin, who is bleeding. He is tying a cloth around his middle to staunch the wound, and his swords are neatly placed on his left.
