Artist: Katsukawa Shun'ei
Title: Samurai faceoff
Date: ca. 1790s.

Extremely rare design of a heroic figure grabbing the armor of a samurai, who turns in surprise to deal with him, hand on the hilt of his sword. Surprisingly similar in energy to some of Kuniyoshi’s better works, where the intensity of the encounter is captured with gusto. The standing warrior wears a robe with a butterfly design, perhaps indicating that he is a hero from the Taira clan or one of the Soga Brothers. This could be a story from the Tale of the Heike.

Condition: Excellent impression; very good color and condition. Some trimming.
Dimensions: ôban (37 x 24.6 cm)
