The colors are soft pink, lavender, light blue and grey, and our view is from the northern side of the mountain. According to the British Museum notes on this print, on the explanatory sheet accompanying this print in Japanese, the artist describes taking a taxi ride around Lake Kawaguchi in the middle of a cold night in February in order to reach his lodgings, which were directly facing the mountain. From the room in his window he watched the changing aspects of Fuji as the dawn illuminated the majestic mountain. We see here how he captured a specific time of dawn at a specific time of year as well as a specific viewpoint. It is interesting to note that there is a second “white” woodblock on parts of the snow on this print; one can only see this second layer when held up against the light. It seems to use some combination of chalk white and a shiny substrate. This work is also unique in the set in that the title of the print has been embossed (blindprinted) at upper left, perhaps not to distract from the work itself with any additional colors.

Sakuichi Fukazawa was a painter and woodblock print artist born in Niigata prefecture; he exhibited at the Sosaku Hanga Kyokai in 1922 and contributed thirteen prints to the prewar series “One Hundred Views of New Tokyo”. He also took part in the painting events at the 1932 and 1936 Olympic games.

More than thirty sosaku-hanga print artists collaborated to create this series of prints, published between 1938-41, as regional conflicts eventually ignited into World War II. Only 39 were ever issued; the last 29 were edited by Maekawa Senpan. According to the Art Gallery of New South Wales website, publication of this series was stopped by the Japanese authorities during WWII who feared that the interior of Japan would become known to its enemies. This would not be surprising given the paranoia of wartime, but it is also probable that there were other factors, including limited supplies and artists conscripted into the war machine.

The series title is stamped on the right margin in red, and the name of the artist’s group “Nihon Hanga Kyokai sen” is stamped lower left.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Never framed.
