Hasui: Snow at Shirahige (Sold)
Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Snow at Shirahige
Series: Twelve Scenes of Tokyo
Tokyo jûnidai, Yuki no Shirahige. Hasui himself said about this work “...Mukôjima still retains its former appearance, and this imbues it with a unique charm. On this particular day, it had been snowing heavily since the morning...I left home in this incessant snow to visit the Hyakka garden. En route I happened upon this scene....”. This work must have made its way out of Watanabe's studio apart from the usual sales channels, as it does not bear Watanabe's seal. As the blocks were destroyed in the 1923 earthquake that destroyed Watanabe's studio, perhaps a printer had already taken this example home with him in 1920. Provenance: This work comes from the private collection of the late Hasui scholar Hisao Shimizu.
Condition: Excellent impression, and color. Very good condition. Some grey block transfer on margins and missing publisher’s seal.
