This fish is highly prized by sushi lovers and can only be wild-caught, thriving in the rocky reefs and breakwaters around Japan’s coastline. This print has the unusual application of a glitter-like substance that is heftier than mica on the encrustations on the rocks. The bellies of the fish contain a nice layer of mica to indicate their shining silver bellies. The earliest limited editions by Nishinomiya Shoin bear a rectangular seal topped with a circular one recto; this one lacks that seal, but has a red hanabishi (diamond-shaped flower) seal verso, also indicating the publisher Nishinomiya Shoin. That edition also has a more muted palette in terms of the background. Originally issued ca. 1939, this impression likely somewhat later.

Bakufu Ohno designed 72 prints in his “Art Portfolio of Familiar Fishes of Nippon”, which was published by the Kyoto publisher Nishinomiya Shoin in five volumes between 1937 and 1941.
