Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Aspects of the Moon

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a creative genius who lived during a time of great societal transformation. He was a consummate draftsman as well as a master at distilling a complex narrative to a single, emotionally poignant image. “100 Aspects of the Moon” was a series published during the final years of Yoshitoshi’s life, when he was at the height of his creative powers. He selected stories that were well-known and gave them an introspective twist, as well as a sophisticated relationship to the ever-changing moon. Egenolf Gallery recently acquired a complete set of this series in exceptional condition–to feel the full intention of the artist one must refer to early impressions, as the mastery of the printers and carvers must match the subtlety of the emotions of the characters. The Moon Series is often regarded today as Yoshitoshi’s masterpiece, and yet the majority of the designs are surprisingly affordable.

Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) 芳年
Title: Mount Yoshino Midnight-Moon 吉野山 夜半 月伊賀局
Series: One Hundred Aspects of the Moon 月百姿
Date: 1886

The court lady Iga no Tsubone fearlessly confronts the ghost of Kiyotaka. Her trailing robes have been printed with an oxidizing lead pigment, which adds depth and a unique cast to the orange garment. The ghost is clutching at the title cartouche with his eerie fingers, which is a modern touch that seems to break the fourth wall. Kiyotaka’s ghost appears without feet as an apparition in shades of grey. He glares at her with yellow eyes, hovering on wings, which are a very unusual aspect of a Japanese ghost. (In first editions such as this example, the yellow in the eyes has had an extra layer of pigment applied, to give it an extra intensity.) She remains completely calm, which is apparently the best way to disarm a ghost; in fact, she successfully convinces the ghost to stop haunting the exiled court at Nara. The white of her robes and the white of the cartouche have been blindprinted to mimic fabric. The nue is a beast with the face of a monkey, the body of a badger, the paws of a tiger and the tail of a snake’s head. Yoshitoshi has designed this scene in such a way that it is difficult to know if this is the evening that Yorimasa actually shot the nue, as here he seems to be adjusting his sleeve, perhaps to tie it back to shoot the creature, and his bow rests at his side. Apparently Kazan was tricked into abdicating by taking presumably secret priestly vows while in mourning for his favorite consort. The temple is Gangyo, which was later renamed Kazan Temple, where he died in 1008 at the age of forty-one. Kazan wears a transparent cloth over his cap of rank and is accompanied by a single loyal retainer. There is a complex black-on-black pattern on Kazan’s robe that can only be seen in reflected light. It is difficult to know if this is the actual night of the secret ceremony, which occurred before dawn under a full moon, or if this is a scene from later years that shows a contemplative moment of reflection.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
Dimensions: ôban 35.6 x 24 cm
Publisher: Akiyama Buemon
Literature: John Stevenson, Yoshitoshi’s One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (San Francisco: San Francisco Graphic Society, 1992), number 90. The scene is bathed in moonlight, yet Daruma’s expression is intense as he focuses in concentration inward. The wall crumbles around him and small vines are growing. Yoritomo, leader of the Minamoto clan, has sent his retainer Kato Kagekado to the Taira family mansion with orders to kill his sworn enemy, Taira no Kanetaka. This famous story was told in the “Heike monogatari”, the 13th C. account of these exploits that Yoshitoshi’s audience would have been familiar with. In this scene, Kagekado dangles his helmet on his spear in front of the sliding door, causing the Taira leader to strike at it and lose his balance. The low vantage point of this design–which seems to be from the perspective of perhaps a frog in the Kamo River––is interesting, as well as the the strong cropping of the main elements. This may be a subconscious homage to Hiroshige, who was famous for employing both of these visual techniques in his later series, or perhaps it is more of a winking reference. They were notorious for boisterous and daredevil behavior. Unlike other fire prints, the firemen in this print are motionless. In contrast the smoke and flames are roaring and covering the sight of the moon. The static fireman and his colleague next to him in the foreground grasp their standard, a matoi, which made of paper, leather and wood. The fox had visited the main character, a hunter, to try to convince him how wrong and evil it is to hunt foxes, animals of great virtue. Here the fox looks backwards as he heads into the wilds, perhaps to check for watchers, as he reverts to his true form. He still wears the priest’s garments, and his hands and feet are still human, and he still clasps a rosary and a walking stick. The wild susuki grasses are the only setting, and Yoshitoshi has drawn them with such care that they create all the atmosphere that is needed, other than the yellow crescent moon. The grasses have blindprinting on their tasseled seed-heads, and the withered stalks create a perfect air of mystery and desolation. There is also blindprinting on the white of the cartouche and the background bokashi has been done with great care. In the story, the fox is caught in a trap on the way home, as he has lost the power of human analysis and takes the bait out of instinct. Suketsune was responsible for the death of the father of Goro and his brother Juro in the 12th century. This story was the inspiration for at least twenty-three plays and was a staple of Japanese literature and would have been known to pretty much all of Yoshitoshi’s buying public. Yoshitoshi has chosen an unusual angle to depict the young Goro’s face: he looks up as a cuckoo flies across the crescent moon, capturing briefly his attention before focusing on the grim task at hand. The call of the cuckoo (hototogisu) is a symbol of the transience of life, and here would seem to be an omen of a young life about to be cut short.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
Dimensions: ôban (35.5 x 23.8 cm)
Publisher: Akiyama Buemon
Literature: Stevens, John: “Yoshitoshi’s One Hundred Aspects of The Moon” #9. See British Museum, Rijksmuseum, Library of Congress.
Seal: Yoshitoshi no in
Signature: Yoshitoshi

Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi 芳年 (1839-1892)
Title: Faith in the third-day moon--Yukimori
Series: One Hundred Aspects of the Moon 月百姿
Date: 1886

Yukimori was a 16th century general who fought his entire and brief adult life against impossible odds. Although Stevenson thinks that this figure is probably a person, to this observer the hand looks doll-like and seems to belong to one of the festival’s famous automatons, a life-sized mechanical figure that would have been created just for the parade. The platform is covered with a brocaded scene of a ceremonial horse-race or polo game. It would seem also that this brocade draping would be a good place to obscure the lower workings of the automaton figure. Here we see Teika falling into slumber on the verandah of the Shinto shrine at Sumiyoshi, a shrine dedicated to the god of poetry. It was said that this deity would appear to eminent poets who spent the night at this shrine, and here we see the deity himself floating in the air in front of the sleeping poet, perhaps about to enter his dreams and inspire him. The God of Poetry appears as an old man with voluminous white robes that have been blind-printed, and he bears the bulging forehead of an immortal, an indication of his wisdom. As Stevenson notes, the deity seems to be taking the place of the unseen moon, and the atenashi bokashi (”borderless printing”) that creates the cloud around him was a difficult process for the printer. This is a stunning early impression, with blindprinting also in the robes of the sleeping man and in the white cartouche, as well as lacquer-like printing in the black areas of the design. Stevenson notes that the grey block in the robe of the deity also only occurs in first editions of this design. Yoshisada has halted his troops in order to pray to the deities of the sea, as he and his men seem trapped by enemy warships with archers at sea and enemy soldiers lining the cliffs above them. As a token of his sincerity he offers his sword into the waves, which is the moment that Yoshitoshi has captured here. The moon shines only in its three-quarter state, and the horizon has been printed with oxidizing lead pigment. The dragon king, ruler of the tides, seems to have heeded Yoshisada’s request, as in the morning the tide ebbed out far enough for his men to advance against Kamakura and defeat the Hojo clan. As Yoshitoshi was an excellent draftsman, he probably has chosen to portray the peasant as literally twisted, as it was considered against the order of things for a low-born person to kill a lord. Mitsuhide was shogun for only 13 days when he was killed by armed peasants in 1582. Soon after this the military rulers had the farmers disarmed in a “sword hunt”, which was an important step in the development of the samurai as an armed class distinct from the farmers. Perhaps he is thinking of the association of falling blossoms and impermanence, and has glimpsed a future that fills him with trepidation. Next to him is a woman’s kimono, elaborately decorated with flying plovers and waves. It has been hung between trees as a makeshift shelter for a picnic to view the cherry blossoms in the moonlight. We see a glimpse of a fancy picnic box behind the robe at lower left. A large traveling hat is also shown behind him. This area is now part of Ueno Park in Tokyo, and it is still famous for its cherry blossoms. As Stevenson notes, there is an element of mystery to this design, as the posture of the young man seems incongruous to the scene, so we are left to ponder its meaning. Beautifully printed, there is an extra pattern in the black of the young man’s robe, and there is blindprinting in the white title cartouche and woodgrain evident in the sky.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Every person in Japan would know this hero, the context and the story, although here we are only getting a slice of the picture. Unseen is his opponent Benkei, as well as the setting of Gojo Bridge in Kyoto, where their famous fight took place. The fierce Benkei has challenged the slight and feminine-looking Yoshitsune to a fight to try to claim his sword. Yoshitsune, however, has been trained by the magical tengu on Mount Karuma and Benkei cannot pin him down to engage him as he is remarkably light on his feet. Here we see how Yoshitsune almost seems to be taking flight as he throws down his fan to distract Benkei, and the gauzy pink material of his outfit flows behind him almost like wings. The material itself is beautifully printed, with both soft pink and white; it has been blindprinted to give it the texture of a cloth. The white cartouche is also blind printed with a different pattern. A fascinating vantage point on a perennial story, proof that Yoshitoshi never stopped innovating. A stunningly early impression. The nice part about this story is that the two became friends and no blood was shed during this fight, and Benkei became Yoshitsune’s most loyal follower, with years of exploits to follow.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. One morning when she went to draw water from her well, the fast-growing morning-glory vine had climbed up the well rope during the night. Rather than disturb the beauty of the asagao flowers, she went to her neighbor’s house with the haiku:

“Morning glories have taken my bucket so I ask for water”.

There is a different poem on the cartouche here, perhaps written by Yoshitoshi himself:“The bottom of the bucket/which Lady Chiyo filled has fallen out/the moon has no home in the water”. This humorous story takes the associations of Chiyo’s original poem and creates a new story. The moon was considered its most beautiful when reflected in water, even in the water of a well bucket. If the bucket has spilled, one can no longer see the moon’s reflection. Here we see the full moon of late autumn above, the round persimmon fruits above also echoing its shape. Chiyo seems to have just dropped her bucket after drawing it from the well, she seems almost lost in reverie, perhaps her thoughts filled with poetry. She wears the fashions of the early 1700s, including a kimono with chrysanthemum flowers against shibori patterns. This is an exquisitely early impression, with deep blindprinting on the title cartouche and perfectly sharp lines, especially those comprising her facial features and hairline. There is also oxidation on the red of her kimono and on the fruits of the persimmon tree.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
