Yoshitoshi 芳年
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was considered the last great master of ukiyo-e. He is known for his images of extreme violence and bloody imagery as well his sensitive images of esquisite beauty. He inherited from his teacher Kuniyoshi the ability to capture the essence of a story in a single image. John Stevenson has written several books on this great master, including Yoshitoshi's major series of One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, Thirty-six Ghosts and others. As an artist, Yoshitoshi continued to innovate and build on his unique style throughout his life. He kept improving artistically as his career lengthened. Egenolf Gallery has specialized in Yoshitoshi since Herbert Egenolf published two catalogs on the artist in the 1970s.

Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: The Ghost of Wicked Genta Yoshihira Attacking Namba Jiro at Nunobiki Waterfall
Series: “New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts”
Date: 1889

Minamoto no Yoshihira was a fierce warrior who earned the name “Wicked Genta of Kamakura” as a teenager. Her trailing robes have been printed with an oxidizing lead pigment, which adds depth and a unique cast to the orange garment. The ghost is clutching at the title cartouche with his eerie fingers, which is a modern touch that seems to break the fourth wall. Kiyotaka’s ghost appears without feet as an apparition in shades of grey. He glares at her with yellow eyes, hovering on wings, which are a very unusual aspect of a Japanese ghost. (In first editions such as this example, the yellow in the eyes has had an extra layer of pigment applied, to give it an extra intensity.) She remains completely calm, which is apparently the best way to disarm a ghost; in fact, she successfully convinces the ghost to stop haunting the exiled court at Nara. The white of her robes and the white of the cartouche have been blindprinted to mimic fabric. They were notorious for boisterous and daredevil behavior. Unlike other fire prints, the firemen in this print are motionless. In contrast the smoke and flames are roaring and covering the sight of the moon. The static fireman and his colleague next to him in the foreground grasp their standard, a matoi, which made of paper, leather and wood. The fireman opposite in silhouette has a different standard, belonging to other group. The fireman wears a heavy quilted jacket, which is soaked with water before he approached the flames. As seen on his right hand the hands are covered by the long sleeves for protection. On his head cover the name of group, kumi, is mentioned: the circular stands for “i” for ichi, namely the first or one. He belongs to “Group Number One.” His jacket has a character matoi, indicating that he is the troop’s standard-bearer. The smoke and flames have been given texture by splattering lime onto the paper. This lime, gofun, was made from powdered chalk or sea shells, mixed with glue. It shows the warrior Oku (or Waka) Handayû completing the stroke with his sword following the beheading of his enemy. It is signed “Shimoto Ôju Ikkaisai Yoshitoshi ga”. The date is circa 1866. Although there is still some red under-drawing on the enemy’s head, it is quite a finished drawing in all other aspects. The line is very confident. There is some western-style shading on the face, done in a soft, red-brown wash. I showed the drawing to Roger Keyes and he had no doubt as to its authenticity and that it comes directly from the hand of Yoshitoshi himself. It is very much in keeping with his other early work. (Yoshitoshi’s circumstances at the time would not have allowed him to have a pupil do the drawing for him, in any case.) They were notorious for boisterous and daredevil behavior. The splattering effect is different in every impression.

Dimensions: ôban vertical
Publisher: Akiyama Buemon
Literature: Stevens, John: Yoshitoshi’s One Hundred Aspects of The Moon, Hong Kong, 1944. #22
Seal: Taiso; Engraver:Yamamoto
Signature: Yoshitoshi

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0079/3388/6546/products/3525464979_f5de4839-56fc-4a06-b4fa-0cccacca8f72.jpg?v=1564326047
yot171
Yoshitoshi: Troops loyal to the shogun Tokugawa Iemochi regroup during a bloody battle at Sannô Shrine in Ueno.
