Here we see Mori no Ranmaru, a retainer of the 16th century military leader Oda Nobunaga. He strikes a dramatic pose, holding a lantern aloft and looking behind him at the supernatural sago palm. This particular palm tree had been imported from a southern climate, and after complaining nightly of homesickness it apparently took matters into its own fronds and began walking home.
