It is one of the most popular and enduring stories in Japan, supposedly based on an actual event during the Kamakura period. This must be the moment just prior to the famous armor-pulling scene between Soga Goro and Yoshihide, Yoshimori’s son. Yoshihide is a famous strongman, and here he is seated in his voluminous robes that feature a crane crest. This scene must have happened immediately following their lord’s death, as they took care to never gather together in a prominent way to avoid suspicion of vendetta planning until they carried out their revenge attack two years later. We see a stream of samurai lining the outer gate and more arriving by palanquin. Only one Ronin is identified in the outer crowd; the man seen in the palanquin at lower right. We see townsfolk lined up at upper right; this must be related to the events of the day. The story of the revenge of the Forty-Seven Ronin is one of the most legendary vendettas in Japanese history, which is saying a lot. Yoshitoshi has chosen the moment of discovery when Omori sees the young woman’s reflection in the stream and realizes that she is a demon in disguise. He then draws his sword and does what he must do, but here we see a terrific contrast between the young woman’s demeanor and the warrior’s fierce, doubting expression. Tadamori has been ordered to investigate a ghostly figure seen on the grounds of Mido Temple near Kyoto, and he finds that it is only a poor attendant wearing a straw hat who is out at night to refill the oil lanterns. Here we see the moment of discovery, where the suspicious Tadamori sees the bedraggled fellow holding his oil can. In some versions of the story the man is actually a thief who is stealing the oil; this might be the case with this scene. The oil thief seems to be using the lid of his oil pitcher to ladle oil from the lantern into the container he is holding, although at this moment it seems unlikely that he’ll go unpunished. We see surrounding the cartouche the stone lantern, the straw hat and the high sandals that are related to the story. Kato Kiyomasa was in the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the shrewd and ruthless unifier of Japan in the 16th century, and Kiyomasa’s position here on hands and knees is one of obeisance. He seems either to be reporting to Hideyoshi or awaiting orders from him. Here Hideyoshi is already an older man and is dressed in everyday clothing. This viewer would postulate that this scene instead shows the earthquake that destroyed Hideyoshi’s castle, Momoyama, only a year after it was completed in 1594. It would be hard to surmise another reason why Hideyoshi would be shown out-of-doors with female court ladies while flames and smoke fill the air behind them. Indeed, this bears resemblance to the 1885 triptych by Yoshitoshi that shows the Fushimi earthquake scene, but in that work it is Kiyomasa who is is protecting Hideyoshi and a group of terrified court women. The woman that Hideyoshi is comforting cannot be his mother, as she died in 1592, and the woman shown is obviously quite young; perhaps she is another relative of his, or even a concubine. The title Omandokoro usually refers to Hideyoshi’s mother--here it must be the term for another noblewoman of rank (if Omandokoro is the reading given to the name cartouche at lower right). The rising smoke in the background was printed with a lead-orange pigment that has oxidized to dramatic shades of grey. There is also a lead pigment in the skirt of the woman holding Hideyoshi’s sword, perhaps indicating iridescence.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. They disguised themselves as characters from Buddhist Hell in order to terrify any visitors. Here we see a thief grabbing Kotarô’s belt who has tied on his head the horns of a demon, while one at far left is dressed as the hag Datsuiba. We see two of the Lucky Gods, Ebisu and Daikoku, acting out a famous scene from the well-known play Date kurabe Okuni kabuki or perhaps Date zensei sakura no iromaku (伊達旭盛桜彩幕). Kneeling in a kabuki stance we see Daikoku, holding his famous mallet above his head as he attempts to strike at the large, evil mouse lower left who (in the play) has stolen a precious scroll . To the left we see Ebisu in the role of Nikki Danjo, who in this scene is always shown making this magical mudra and holding a scroll in his mouth as he performs his evil magic. Ebisu is always shown with a fishing pole as one of his attributes, as here. Written at top left is Buyû hakkei 武勇八契, or the “Bravery of the Eight Heroes”, but it is difficult to make the connection between this kabuki scene and this notation. Kuniyoshi has made a number of corrections to Daikoku, adjusting both the position of Daikoku and the position of his mallet above his head; the under-drawing may be seen below the pasted area of correction. There are several sketches of other faces, and it would make sense that they would be for the five other Lucky Goods, namely, Bishamon at lower right, Benzai upper right, and Hotei Fukurokuji and Jurôjin at top. Kuniyoshi designed many kabuki prints that feature this play in 1849, so perhaps he is experimenting with a fresh take on a perennially popular scene.
