Title: Beauty with Umbrella in Snow
Series: Fuku Zukushi “Customs of the East: A Collection of Fuku Words”.
Date: 1889

A beauty and her companion lean against the blowing snowstorm. Her face is charmingly framed by her hair covering, and her kimono seems to be decorated with snowflakes. She is navigating the snow in high geta that feature toe coverings--she seems focused on keeping her balance. The face of her companion is obscured by his snow-covered umbrella. To the left we see a riksha driver heading our way, leaning forward while his passenger is glimpsed beneath a weather cover. Two puppies frolic nearby. This amusing series elaborates on words containing the sound “Fuku”; here we have Hu Buku, which is also written in Romaji.
