Toshi Yoshida: Evening Scene of Food Stalls (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Evening Scene of Food Stalls (Supper Wagon)
Date: 1938

Evening scene of street eateries, glowing in a line, with a woman and her child walking past. A charming dog at right seems very interested in all of the enticing smells that must be emanating from this restaurant row. The array of glowing lanterns and Japanese folks in traditional attire is most evocative of this specific time and place. Although there are many posthumous editions of this design, including some printed very recently, this one is pencil-signed by the artist, so it is an early, lifetime  first edition. The Romaji title printed at left reads “Suppur Waggon”
