Toshi Yoshida: Shinjuku (sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Shinjuku (Sinjuhn)
Date: 1938

Prewar scene of peaceful Shinjuku, with Japanese in traditional attire visiting shops and restaurants. The array of glowing lanterns and bustling storefronts is most evocative of this specific time and place. The figures are more clearly defined than we see in most prints done by his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, who tended to blur the figures into the landscapes around them. Although there are many posthumous editions of this design, including some printed very recently, this one is pencil-signed by the artist, so it is an early, lifetime edition.
