Kitagawa Kazuo: Summer in a Bamboo Grove (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kitagawa Kazuo
Title: Summer in a Bamboo Grove
Date: 1919

A man is seen through a grove of multihued bamboo stalks, the thatch of a nearby roof seen at right. This is the only work published by Watanabe that is known by this artist. He was a pupil of Kaburagi Kiyokata. An extremely scarce pre-earthquake design, it is a shame that this artist did not do more published designs. This work has a similar presence to the subtle feeling of an early Shinsui landscape. Shown in a full page image in “The new wave” (Page 175, plate 219).
