Hasui: Matsushima In Moonlight 月の松島 (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kawase Hasui (1883-1957)
Title: Matsushima In Moonlight
Date: 1919

Hasui himself said “It certainly goes without saying that this view is superb. In particular, the charm of the islands bathed in moonlight creates an impression of eternal beauty”. This is a jewel-like, highly sought-after design in pristine condition. The full moon emanates a yellow glow to the surrounding sky, and creates a beautiful reflective trail in the water below. The swirls of textural  baren marks in the clouds contrast with the glassy smoothness of the sea below. One of the most celebrated and picturesque views in Japan, Matsushima is considered one of the top three scenic views. There is a famous 19th c. haiku that describes the islands as so striking as to leave the poet at a loss for words: Matsushima ah!/ A-ah, Matsushima, ah!/ Matsushima, ah!
