In his writings, Watanabe emphasized that the designer of the print –the artist– had total control over the entire process of production, working with the carver and especially the printer as though they were simple extensions of his creative self. Watanabe wrote "In the case of a woodblock print, [the artist]...uses a block instead of a brush...In short, for the artist to express his ideals, the printer and the carver assist his work as though they were his arms and legs, and this means that the artist himself must have a profound knowledge of the print process." (See "The new wave" for quote, page 32). Evening scene of the festival lanterns on the streets of Kyoto in the shape of an ôgi fan. From the publisher we have the process set of the original watercolor painting, the corrected test proof print, and the final, finished artwork. It is interesting to see how closely the carvers were able to duplicate the painting using woodblocks. It is also interesting to see the subtle changes that the artist wanted in the proof of the woodblock. We can see that the artist wanted some lines lightened in value at the top and bottom of the design, and also that the signature and title were moved from the right side of the print to the left side. Tokuriki was a Kyoto-based artist, and we see how his works suggest painting rather than woodblock. The Japanese publishers and craftsmen responsible for printmaking in the 20th century did not make public very much about their craft, so publisher’s sets like this one which shows the process of creating a print are a valuable window into the hanmoto production process. Tokuriki studied at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, and after the war he founded his own publishing company, Matsukyu. Grand Canyon (Cloud Shadows, Grand Canyon, cat. 100) is an explicit homage to Yoshida Hiroshi, who represented the same part of the canyon, and thus the print is a fitting start to the new series, Meisho to no Tabi (Travels with the Master) projected to include several landscape prints that directly address some of Hiroshi's best-known non-Japanese travel prints."

"Binnie even made a copy of the Japanese title on Hiroshi's Grand Canyon and then cut a block to reproduce it on the left margin of his own print. Moreover, like Hiroshi, Binnie uses pencil to write the print's title in English and to sign the print. In the final act of homage, Grand Canyon was printed in the Yoshida studio in an attempt to reproduce something of the "soft feel" of Hiroshi's work. Despite these acts connecting the print with Yoshida's image, Binnie worked from nature rather than from Hiroshi's print. I cannot believe that training with a bamboo sword is the direct way of fighting with a real sword, and the direct exercise for a real battle, but I may say that as sport it furnishes good elements in its nature. It should be considered as a good training for the person with or without the sword. I think the battle with sword has similar stylistic and ceremonial elements of sumo, which is characteristic to Japanese. The very strict rules for a match of sumo, such as touching one finger on the dohyô ground disqualifies; and in kendo below the torso remains unprotected. This must surely be the intention, and even the color of Watanabe’s seal is done in the same soft reddish tone. In addition to the unique color scheme, the printing is quite simplified for a Watanabe-published work from the 1930s. Her bright white face with downcast eyes stands out amidst the festive colors of her costume and the rather formidable headdress. There is a kabuki dance called Hane no Kamuro, and photos of those performances show a kabuki actor wearing a similar costume. The kabuki dance has the male actor playing the young girl (kamuro) who is playing with the battledore and shuttlecock (hane), from the traditional New Year’s game. There are also performances on YouTube that feature actual young girls performing this dance. The long sleeves of the kimono feature black handle-like accessories that attach to long streamers, which we see here on the dancer’s costume as well. In earlier times a kamuro was a young assistant to a courtesan who was in training for the profession. Shuho was primarily a painter, and he only designed a few woodblock prints. In the thirties he was known to have developed a keen interest in dance.

Dimensions: 43.8 x 30.3 cm
Literature: See “Seven Masters” by Andreas Marks for an excellent biography of the artist (page 173). Signature: Shuho

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0079/3388/6546/files/YMS006_db91646b-89bb-46d4-9368-b224e86ce47a.jpg?v=1766988306
hashimoto-ikeda-koei-snowy-egrets-in-rain
Hashimoto (ikeda) Koei: Snowy Egrets in Rain (RESERVED)

Artist: Hashimoto Koei (1899-?)
Title: Three Snowy Egrets Date: ca. 1950

Three snowy egrets make their way through green marsh grasses. The background features a highly textured white-to-black gradation and the marks of the baren are evident, adding depth to the image. The birds seem to glow against a dark background, and a silver rain falls. Their snowy plumage features embossing. Koei Hashimoto was a Kyoto artist who also specialized in calligraphy. There seem to be several editions of this design; the Art Institute of Chicago has an example that was donated in 1950 that was printed ca. 1930 with a different set of blocks (1950.1499). The publisher’s information is unknown on that example. This version of this work most often appears with the Uchida publisher’s seal, but this example has what must be the artist’s red seal instead. There is no publisher’s information on the print, but the paper and the printing would fit to a mid 20th century date, so it is possible that this predates the Uchida editions.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
Dimensions: 43.5 x 28.3 cm (approx) Signature: Koei ga (in silver, upper right)

Artist: Itō Shinsui (1898-1972)
Title: Pupil of the Eye (Gendai bijinshû dai-nishû-Hitomi)
Series: The Second Series of Modern Beauties Date: 1936 (Showa 11)

“Pupil of the Eye” from the “Second Series of Modern Beauties”.
