Shibata Zeshin: Cockerel, Hen and Chicks (sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891)
Title: Rooster, Hen and Chicks
Date: ca. 1900

Zeshin was considered Japan’s most innovative lacquer artist, and his lacquer works command six-figure prices. Here we can admire his mastery of composition in terms of how he uses space to create his design; a cockerel, hen and chicks perch on a straw hanging, all peering out from the upper right corner of the work. The hanging decoration with the ferns was an auspicious New Year’s decoration (shida), and the first crowing of a rooster at New Year was called hatsutori, and was regarded as a good omen. This work was published by Daikokuya ca. 1900, and was modeled on an earlier oversized 1861 surimono design by the artist.
