Goton Juton (Five Pigs to Ten Pigs). Escher-like composition of five Chinese soldiers that combine to form ten different bodies. The bodies bear the name of a city or battle area during the Sino-Japanese War. For instance, at top, the sirt reads Taiwan, and at left, Sea of China. The title also reads Yoromushi Korokoro, or Tumbling Weaklings.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
Dimensions: ôban

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0079/3388/6546/products/3477098723_673fe054-df7e-4d3a-94f1-9a35a2255bb9.jpg?v=1564330870
yot719
Yoshitoshi: The Yotsuya Ghost Story

Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi
Title: The Yotsuya Ghost Story
Series: New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts
Date: 1892

Peaceful moment of the beautiful and virtuous Oiwa cradling her young son, an unusually tranquil scene selected from a kabuki play that is famous for its bloodcurdling violence. At right is another man stretched beneath his own scrotum quilt, a youngster exclaiming at a book that features a picture of a tanuki. At bottom is a different scene. An unwell tanuki is having his pulse read by the doctor tanuki, who kneels and concentrates. His own scrotum peeks from beneath his robes, but we can assume that this is a normal occurence. The explicit and literally eye-popping gore rivals that of his peer Yoshitoshi. On the ground lies the head of a man, and in the background we see a very expensive container lying spilled open on the ground. Spattered blood and soil have been applied by hand for realism. As the story goes, one night during a shadow-casting full moon, Omori met a beautiful young woman in opulent robes who asked to be carried across a stream. Yoshitoshi has chosen the moment of discovery when Omori sees the young woman’s reflection in the stream and realizes that she is a demon in disguise. He then draws his sword and does what he must do, but here we see a terrific contrast between the young woman’s demeanor and the warrior’s fierce, doubting expression. The orange-red robe of the beauty contains an oxidizing lead pigment, which here appears oxidized to a deep color. Kato Kiyomasa was in the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the shrewd and ruthless unifier of Japan in the 16th century, and Kiyomasa’s position here on hands and knees is one of obeisance. He seems either to be reporting to Hideyoshi or awaiting orders from him. Here Hideyoshi is already an older man and is dressed in everyday clothing. This viewer would postulate that this scene instead shows the earthquake that destroyed Hideyoshi’s castle, Momoyama, only a year after it was completed in 1594. It would be hard to surmise another reason why Hideyoshi would be shown out-of-doors with female court ladies while flames and smoke fill the air behind them. Indeed, this bears resemblance to the 1885 triptych by Yoshitoshi that shows the Fushimi earthquake scene, but in that work it is Kiyomasa who is is protecting Hideyoshi and a group of terrified court women. The woman that Hideyoshi is comforting cannot be his mother, as she died in 1592, and the woman shown is obviously quite young; perhaps she is another relative of his, or even a concubine. The title Omandokoro usually refers to Hideyoshi’s mother--here it must be the term for another noblewoman of rank (if Omandokoro is the reading given to the name cartouche at lower right). The rising smoke in the background was printed with a lead-orange pigment that has oxidized to dramatic shades of grey. There is also a lead pigment in the skirt of the woman holding Hideyoshi’s sword, perhaps indicating iridescence.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. Here is the actor Ichikawa Sadanji as Gosho no Gorozô, from the play Soga maoyô tateshi no goshozome. The complex story ends tragically, as usual. Here the actor wears brightly patterned garments and has a shakuhachi flute that is protrudes to the left .Pink blossoms rain down, intimating the tragic ending of the play; falling blossoms usually indicate a shortened life in the story, as they symbolize the impermanent nature of our existence.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. They seem to have been done from life, with the actors actually sitting for their portraits behind a screen, as this is illustrated in the preface for the series. It is unusual in ukiyo-e to see actors portrayed in a way that may be today considered “realistic”, as features were generally stylized within certain artistic conventions.
