Katsutaka at the moment he has been discovered by the enemy Takeda clan as he sneaks across enemy lines. The Takeda sentries are shown here on the left bank peering down at Katsutaka, who has swum from a besieged castle to give a message to Tokugawa Ieyasu for help. Upon his return to the castle the alarm bells ring, scaring a group of herons and alerting the enemy to his presence. This is a very early impression that includes very finely printed translucent grey rain and many areas of bokashi. The feathers on the herons feature blindprinting.
