  • Sold.

Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892)
Title: Streetwalker Moon
Series: One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi)
Date: 1887

A tsujigimi (streetwalker) glances up at the moon, the white of her face echoing the white face of moon, both partially obscured. With her teeth she holds her headscarf (which would help to hide her face) as it is being tugged away by the breeze. This streetwalker is portrayed as beautiful and sympathetic, and carries herself with elegant comportment, although the reality of her life would certainly have been a sad one. This is considered one of the best designs in the series. The poem by the female poet Hitotose has been translated: “Like reflections in the rice-paddies, the faces of streetwalkers in the darkness, are exposed by the autumn moonlight”.
