Title: Hôjô Tokiyori in Snow
Series: Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan (Dai nippon meisho kagami)
Date: 1878

The great 13th century Regent Hôjô Tokiyori turns to see the wife of the samurai Sano Tsuneyo waving goodbye as he journeys forth into a snowstorm. Tokiyori became a monk and traveled about the country incognito to get a better feel for the conditions of his people. The family of Tsuneyo, an impoverished samurai, was so hospitable that they cut down three precious bonsai trees to keep their guest warm. The story was made into a Noh play and later a Jôruri play. This is considered the best design in the series.
