Title: Kobayakawa Takakage Debating with the Tengu of Mt. Higo.
Series: New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts

The great 16th century warrior Kobayakawa Takakage (1532-1597) sits fearlessly as the wise Tengu of Mount Hiko appears in a mysterious fog. The Tengu is attired as a yamabushi, or itinerant mountain priest with a robe featuring oxidized lead pigment. With a three-color cartouche (first edition). Yoshitoshi's slices/glimpses of Takakage and his terrified men have a very modern, manga-like feeling to this viewer.
