We see Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Akamatsu Manyu Ume no Shirahata. He has a somber expression and holds a short dagger. Danjuro IX was the great-great-great-great grandson of Ichikawa Danjuro I. In July of 1879 Danjuro took part in the gala night at the Shintomiza in honor of General Ulysses S Grant, who ended his world tour with a stop in Japan. Danjuro IX played a Japanese version of Robert E Lee in a fascinating drama about the US Civil war that was transposed into 11th Japan. The name of the play was “Gosannen Oshu Gunki”.
