Kishio Koizumi: Municipal Hall and Kangyo Bank 市政会館と勧業銀行 (SOLD)

  • Sold.

Artist: Kishio Koizumi (1893-1945)
Title: Municipal Hall and Kangyo Bank in Tokyo (With Vintage Bus and  1930s Automobile)
Date: 1932

Prewar view of Tokyo City Municipal Hall and Auditorium, Hibiya, next to a formidable bank building in white stone. The bank must have been destroyed in the war and rebuilt, as contemporary photos show a different structure than the prewar postcard photographs, which date the bank structure to 1927-29. At left we see three schoolgirls walking abreast on the sidewalk, their school bus just pulling away. We see another automobile of the period at lower right. A charming scene of the Tokyo that was lost in the war. With beautiful woodgrain evident in the sky. Self-carved, self printed; published by Asahi Press.
