The Train Wreck near Oiso. We see passengers climbing from the windows and exits of a steam train that has been derailed due to the force of the earthquake. This train was running the line between Oiso and Hiratsuka. The Great Kanto Earthquake on September 1st, 1923 caused destruction and fires and resulted in a great loss of life. Kondo Shiun was a nihonga artist who was also an illustrator who designed kuchi-e for various publications in the early 20th century. The work contains the date of Taisho 12 in the lower left corner.
