Jun'ichiro Sekino: Iizaka Hot Springs, Anabara (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Jun'ichiro Sekino (1914-1988)
Title: Iizaka Anabara (Hot Springs)
Date: 1947

Winter view of the Yoshikawaya, a historic onsen founded in 1841, located in Anabara Onsen, near Iizaka Onsen. The traditional building shown here has since been replaced with a larger, more modern structure, but we can see from the historical photographs on the Yoshikawaya website that this is the onsen that Sekino captured in the 1940s. The inn is located on the Surikami River and has views of Mt. Katakura. The style of this early print is subtle and impressionistic, a departure from his later works which feature stronger colors and are more boldly stylistic. This scarce design is from an edition of only 30, and features a beautiful layer of sparkling mica in the sky and snow. Sekino is one of the major postwar figures of the sosaku hanga (creative print) movement.

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition.
Dimensions: 41.2 x 30.2 cm
Signed: Signed "Junichiro Sekino", dated and numbered by the artist in pencil. Sealed in red "Jun".
