Artist: Kawase Hasui
Title: Snow at Zojo Temple 雪の増上寺
Date: 1922, 18 January

Snow at Zojo Temple (Yuki no Zojoji). Iconic image of a man in western dress walking towards the majestic vermilion main gate of Zojo Temple. This print marks the beginning of Hasui’s portrayal of figures in western dress. The man’s overcoat catches the wind in symmetry with the blowing gusts of snow, which also align with the upturned eaves of the temple. Could this be considered a self-portrait of the artist? Extremely scarce in this condition, this work was produced in a limited edition of 100 prints that was by subscription only. It is also a pre-earthquake print and considered one of Hasui’s finest designs. There is an explanatory note that was pasted verso by the publisher (which has been removed but is included), as well as a limited edition seal.
Here is the translation of the note: For the members of the Edo Art Appreciation Society: The 3rd Offering of a New Print.
