Artist: Itō Shinsui
Title: Evening on the River, Tamagawa
Date: 1917

A solitary farmer walks on a lonely path across the bed of the Tama River. It is evening, and she is bent beneath a large basket, heading towards a beckoning light in a single house in the distance. Shinsui is best known for his prints of beautiful women, so this pre-earthquake design shows his versatility from a tender age. In this evocative pre-earthquake design, we can see the influence that this and other works done by Shinsui at this time had on the works of his contemporary, Kawase Hasui. The artist himself described this as a "scene of solitude, created by the winter twilight". As noted in "The new wave", the major compositional elements are placed along a distant horizon, amplifying the feeling of solitude. Each element is also printed with its own technique; in the sky the printing has smooth, subtle gradations blending it, and the riverbed is done in a way to create a lot of texture.
