Two white herons descend on the riverside reeds, joining their three wading counterparts. The ferry landing itself is glimpsed only in the distance, as the stars of this design are beautiful, snow-white herons that stand out against the deep blue of the Nakagawa River. The foreground herons, which Smith posits are Chinese egrets, seem to so cheerful in their environment that they are almost smiling. The bodies of the birds feature subtle embossing, as well as the title cartouche. From the first (deluxe) edition, with the extra areas of bokashi, embossing and the deep blue ribbon in the center of the river.
